15 Kitchen Equipment Essentials

Every single kitchen needs equipment, otherwise let's face it, it wouldn't be a kitchen without.

Below are a list of our must have kitchen equipments pieces that will make every day cooking much easier and much more enjoyable. We have also included some of our favourite recommendations alongside too.

1. BLENDER

A blender is no doubt a huge staple in every kitchen and will be one of your best friends that you'll use almost daily. It is used to mix, puree and emulsify substances.

Recommended Products:

Vitamix

Blendtec

NutriBullet

2. FOOD PROCESSOR

A food processor is very similar to a blender, though can be larger and more sturdy. It quickly performs food prep tasks traditionally carried out by hand. They can chop and blitz vegetables, blend ingredients into soups, pastes, sauces, nut butters, and others can mix things like batter and cream.

Recommended Products:

Kenwood Compact

3. CHOPPING BOARD

The bigger the better! Which material? It’s up to you! Wood harbours less bacteria, but requires more maintenance, plastic ones work just as well and can go in the dishwasher.

4. SET OF KNIVES

The perfect trio...

A high quality chef’s knife will be doing most of the work and used for nearly every task, a good quality, sturdy forged-steel chef’s knife will last a long time.

serrated knife is vital for when it comes to slicing bread and comes in handy slicing through a ripe tomato!

The paring knife is the knife you’ll use for smaller tasks that may require more attention to detail.

In addition to knives, you'll also need a knife sharpener. How else will you keep your chef’s knife super sharp? A sharp knife is important in the kitchen, more accidents happen with a blunt knife as it’s more likely to slip.

5. SET OF POTS & PANS

Varying sizes for different uses!

6. NON STICK FRYING PAN

Foods like pancakes and tofu are best fried on a non-stick pan, no worry about them sticking or having to use lots of oil. A great versatile pan used for easy stir fries, sautéing veg and making sauces.

Make sure you use non abrasive tools on the surface, so stick to wood, silicon and synthetic made instead of metal!

7. BAKING TRAYS

These will see a lot of action with all the baking, roasting and toasting that will go down!

8. REUSABLE BAKING SHEETS

There’s nothing worse than having to try peel off grease-proof paper from the bottom of whatever you have baked, so the perfect solution to this is reusable baking sheets. They are easier to use and not to mention more environmentally friendly!

9. MEASURING CUPS & SPOONS

Weighing out ingredients is slowly becoming less common, cups and spoons are quick and straightforward. Great for both dry and wet ingredients. We recommend going for stainless steel or metal ones over plastic as they are more durable.

10. COOLING RACK

To allow proper cooking of baked goods, a cooling rack is essential to avoid soggy bottoms!

11. MIXING BOWLS

Perfect for all mixing jobs and can double as serving bowls! Metal mixing bowls are the lightest and usually cheapest option and are standard in any restaurant.

12. WOODEN SPOONS

A versatile tool for the kitchen that you’ll use often, whilst you’re stirring pots, mixing sauces, baking delicious treats and much more! If you’re a non-stick pan lover, you’ll want to maintain the coating for as long as possible, therefore opting for a wooden spoon will help preserve it, as a metal one would scrape it!

It’s useful to have a couple of these, and make sure you wash them by hand and don’t throw them in the dishwasher!

13. SLOTTED SPATULA/TURNER

Whether you’re flipping pancakes, tofu or burgers, a slotted spatula/turner is what you’ll need.

14. BOX GRATER

Believe it or not, a grater is not just for cheese! Shredding some carrot or beetroot for a salad, or an apple for baking, grating is a fast and efficient way to get your ingredients to a smaller size.

15. DIGITAL KITCHEN SCALES

It would be easy if all recipes used cups and spoons for recipes, wouldn’t it? But they don’t. For those recipes that call for grams or ounces, whip out your scales! A digital version will be more accurate.
